Rafael Soriano

Born in Cidra, province of Matanzas, Cuba, in 1920; Soriano has lived in Miami, FL since 1962. In 1943 he graduated from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, and thereafter was a professor of Art at School of Fine Arts in Matanzas. His first solo exhibition at the Lyseum Club in Havana in 1947. Since then he has had many exhibitions, including a solo show at the 1981 Medellín Biennial and various other exhibitions in Lima, Panamá, San Juan, Detroit, Geneva (Switzerland), and Miami. In 1995 he was given a solo exhibition at the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Fl. 2004 “Mystical Canvas” at the Olga M. and Carlos Saladrigas Gallery, The Ignatian Center for the Arts, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School.

Among Soriano's mayor group exhibitions are “Outside Cuba / Fuera de Cuba” (1987-89: originated at the Zimmerli Museum, Rutgers U; traveled), “Recent Developments in Latin American Drawing” (1987, Art Institute of Chicago), “The Figure in Latin American Art” (1980, Bass Museum, Miami Beach, FL), “Mira! Canadian Club Hispanic Art Tour III” (1989, originated at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery; traveled), Exposition D'Oeuvres Originales de 50 Artistes” (1985, Centre Culturel Editart, Geneva, Switzerland), Expresiones Hispanas: Coors National Art Tour” (1989, originated at the Mexican Cultural Institute, San Antonio, TX; traveled), “Eco-Art” (1992, originated at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro; traveled), and “L'oeuvre graphique de l'atelier Giorgio Upiglio” (1986, Original Graphics, Milan).

Soriano's works are included in major public collections, among them: Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes/Havana, Zimmerli Museum/Rutgers U, Denver Art Museum, Archer Huntington Gallery/U of Texas -- Austin, Lowe Art Museum/ U of Miami, Museum of Art/Fort Lauderdale, Museum of the Americas/OAS--Washington DC, Galería Arte Moderno/Santo Domingo, Zea Museum of Art/Medellín.

He has an extensive critical bibliography, including an individual artist's entry in The Dictionary of Art, London: Macmillan Publishers, 1996.
