“Being an exile and not belonging
are essencial factors of my work… For many years I painted
self-portraits where I appeared both as an aggressor and victim.
The violence characteristic of my work has to do with the urban
conditions under which we are living, but also with those in
Cuba. I believe that here, violence is psychological, while
there, it is physical. My recollections of Cuba are filled with
tragedies and fears, with superstitions and taboos. It also
includes good and loving memories.”
