My work centers around a point: individual liberty, or lack thereof. This focus is the result of having been sent to prison for six months in 1990 for a performance piece. My work is based on the limitations, restrictions, prohibitions, controls and other losses of freedom that are constantly imposed on the human being within society.
From my experience in jail I derived my main technical and material resourcefulness. There I learned, along with my companions in captivity, to draw on handkerchiefs with color crayons and cold cream, and to carve images from blocks of laundry soap. From this comes the theme and inspiration of all my work. There, my language acquired its muffled hermetic tone, the product of the mistrust that prison instills.
Initially, my work was rather anecdotal and self referential while at the moment my interest is to take personal experience towards collective experience, thus symbolizing the imprisoned condition that the collective psyche suffers as it confines the individual.
